It’s been 12 years that I have been on this path of a gluten and dairy free lifestyle. I’ve learned a few things along the way. Especially what NOT to do. The gluten and dairy free lifestyle may not be easy but it is simple.
For the person just starting out, it’s overwhelming from every aspect. Giving up your favourite desserts, no longer grabbing some fast food take-outs and certainly no more trying new foods at social gatherings.
Where do I begin?
Well, it really does not have to be the cardboard diet – nothing that awful. Like anything else you really have to treat it as a goal you’re striving for. It’s not a sprint but a marathon. The goal is better health so you can do the things you like to do and the things you want to do with a pain free body.
Having said that, the first thing to do it write it down. In a world of electronics and online – it is still more impactful to use pen and paper and write it down. Then create a plan of action: Each month/week, plan out theses areas:
1. What new food will I introduce to my diet to add variety?
2. Which activity will I implement so that I’m exercising regularly?
3. How can I plan ahead so that daily meal preparation is efficiently done in a short amount of time?

How I got started on a gluten and dairy free lifestyle
A marvelous vacation turned into a horror story, that’s how it all began. Not only did I return with amazing memories but the H-pylori bacteria in my stomach unbeknownst to me. This bacteria lived and flourished in my stomach for six months before it was finally found, all the while I’m feeling like I’m on death’s row. The treatment to get rid of it, was needless to say just as violent and invasive to my body.
An immediate severe dairy allergy is the result. Slowly over time my body started to reject gluten laced foods. Once again my energy level was waning and I was constantly tired, stressed, lack the mental focus and the drive to get through the day. This went on for more than eight years.
The Kicker
Finally I had a crazy experience where (without any obvious injury) I could not walk, stand or sit without excruciating pain in one knee and hip. Several x-rays, ultra-sounds, MRI’s and no diagnosis of the cause of my pain. Nothing fractured, nothing broken, no falls, no physical injury yet unbelievable pain and zero mobility.
The helplessness of not being able to dress myself or take a shower without help or sleep in my own bed caused me to look for answers in unconventional places.
Knowing that I’m usually eating healthier meals, my darling friend Isabelle brought me a book which talked about eliminating gluten to heal wounds and manage inflammation.
At this point I had nothing to lose, I decided to give the gluten and dairy free lifestyle a try. Mind you, it’s now six week of being confined to a couch, waiting for someone to make me a cup of tea – unable to do anything for myself other than feed my brain with mediations and read.
While I wasn’t regularly having a lot of gluten foods I decided to give it all up, one hundred percent. A brilliant decision!
Victory At Last
Within three weeks of giving up gluten I laid the crutches up again the wall and was able to use my own two feet with the help of the kitchen island to get to the kettle to make a cup of tea for myself.
The exhilaration I felt knowing that I can have the freedom of movement again was beyond belief. I’ve never looked back.
My gluten and dairy free lifestyle made simple, has become part of my very being. A lifestyle that embodies my love for clean ingredients, wholesome foods and the joy of experimenting to create all my favourite foods completely gluten and dairy free.
Additionally, I do not consume night shades, soy, corn, yeast and refined sugar.
Life is good! It’s a priviledge waking up full of energy and ready to tackle my day.
Gluten and dairy free lifestyle made simple is the key, do not over complicate things. Today there’s such a wide variety of options available, it’s easy to find selections to eat, a little more difficult if you’re like me and prefer clean options.
Here’s to better healthy!
